In a heartbreaking turn of events, South Africa’s Ambassador to France and former minister Nathi Mthethwa was found dead in the courtyard of the Hyatt Hotel in Paris on Tuesday, 30 September. Just hours before, he had sent a distressing message to his wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, revealing his intent to end his life.

The couple, whose relationship spanned nearly two decades, last saw each other on Monday afternoon. Mthethwa had booked a room on the 22nd floor of the hotel, where he allegedly forced open a sealed window before plunging to his death.
